My Why

It's been 6 months since my mother passed away from lung cancer, a time during which so many friends, family and acquaintances have expressed sincere condolences, and as with most sad situations a desire from them to want to "do something to make it better". In the first few weeks after her passing it seemed that everywhere we looked someone was offering a meal, a hug, a visit, basically anything they could to make it a little easier for us. It reminded me of how compassionate and caring people can be in the face of disaster, but it also saddened me because more often than not this enthusiasm to bring about change passes as quickly as it comes. This sadness left me with a desire to keep that enthusiasm in others to want to "make it better", around long after the casseroles and the cards stopped coming. This desire brought me to the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership and their annual advocacy summit. I am honored to say I attended that Summit this year and learned a great deal about my role in the fight against Lung Cancer as well as how to involve others for the long haul. With the annual Free to Breathe 5k/walk just a few months away I thought it would be a great time to rally the troops for their participation in this amazing event by joining my team, this team, PAMS PEARLS in honor of my mother and my best friend Pam Jaked. Our team is working to raise a total of $5,000 for this years event as well as to have the largest number of participants registered on a specific team. The race will be held in Raleigh, NC on November 5th, 2011.  If you have any questions about our team or the event please email me at: beansmomnc@yahoo.com

Helping those affected by lung cancer is a high priority and we need your support to make a difference. Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of American men and women; it kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney and melanoma cancers COMBINED. The Free to Breathe® event that we are participating in will raise awareness of the disease and funding for vital research.

Please support our efforts by making a donation through our team fundraising page; it is simple, fast and totally secure. And, we also encourage you to join us on event day!
